A thunderstorm is a type of storm that involves anywheres from small to severe amounts of lightning(obviously), they also come with strong wind and large amounts of precipitation, whether it be rain or snow. Epecialy severe thunderstorms can contain other incredibly dangerous types of weather, like tornadoes.

WHERE:
A google search says that southeastern states, especialy florida, experience thunderstorms more common than other places of the world.
CAUSES:
Thuderstorms are caused by the rapid upward movement of warm moist air. When the air moves up, it condenses into a cumulonimbus. As the air gets colder, the water in the air forms into rain droplets. The rain falling caries cold air with it, creating a downdraft, which causes the strong winds

WHEN:
Thunderstorms are most common in spring and summer in temperate regions, and wetter seasons in tropical regions, and mostly during the afternoon
WHEN/WHY:
or whatever I would shorten "typical metrological conditions" to.
as stated in previous sections, they is most common when it is damp or raining, and in spring and summer or wet seasons depending on your location, they are also most common in the southeastern part of the states,
I didnt know what to put here, so enjoy this lightning stock image
Link, from botw (listen im really hyped for totk ok) getting struck by lightning, as he has metalic gear equiped during a thunderstorm
UPDATE: totk has come out and I have done nothing but play it since launch day
WHAT IT DO:
Several people get seriously injured or killed by thunderstorms each year, though this is often not actualy caused by being directly stuck by lightning, more common risks include:
Wildfires, can be caused by lightning striking a flamible object, like a tree
Hail, though this is not a main aspect of thunderstorms, it can occur during one
Tornadoes, they also can occur during a thunderstorm, tornadoes being massivly destructive are a large risk
IMPACT ON ENVOIRMENT:
Wildfires caused by thunderstorms can easily cause mass destruction in wooded areas (persona referance)
severe winds and large amounts of rain can cause destruction as well

The rubber armour set from botw, the armour lets link become immune to lightning, please note that wearing rubber will most likely not stop you from being struck by lightning link
PREVENTION:
Most thunderstorms wont be very severe, but at any point one can become severe.
The following section is directly taken from a wikipedia article, and will be marked as such.
Know the names of local counties, cities, and towns, as these are how warnings are described.
Monitor forecasts and weather conditions and know whether thunderstorms are likely in the area.
Be alert for natural signs of an approaching storm.
Cancel or reschedule outdoor events (to avoid being caught outdoors when a storm hits).
Take action early so you have time to get to a safe place.
Get inside a substantial building or hard-topped metal vehicle before threatening weather arrives.
If you hear thunder, get to the safe place immediately.
Avoid open areas like hilltops, fields, and beaches, and do not be or be near the tallest objects in an area when thunderstorms are occurring.
Do not shelter under tall or isolated trees during thunderstorms.
If in the woods, put as much distance as possible between you and any trees during thunderstorms.
If in a group, spread out to increase the chances of survivors who could come to the aid of any victims from a lightning strike.
This concludes the section from the wikipedia article thunderstorms
